[ But before he can give up and take that bundled up fabric from his pant pocket, her attention is already taken by the smell of soup. Savory, warm... He might have lost his heightened sense of smell from being a Sanguis, but it almost feels like he still has it, with how strong the aroma was. ...that? Or he's that hungry. Being around a large crowd like this would have worried him. But when he feels that sense of dread build up, all he needs to do is look over at the excited expression on Weiss' face...and it melts away all over again.
Enough so that he even takes her hand in his as he prepares to lead Weiss to the back of the line. Giving it a squeeze, they only get a good few steps away from the side of the line before- ]
[ "Weiss! Cloud!" ]
Uh...?
[ Sure enough, working with other volunteers at the front of the line, a familiar voice and face waves at the couple otherworldly tenants. In one hand is a savory soup ladle hovering over the rather impressive pot of creamy soup, thick chunks of carrots, potatoes, celery, practically the whole damn garden- the culprit of this lovely smelling space. In her excitement at seeing the two safe and sound, Elaine even gestures for the two to come up to the front to see her.
At first, Cloud looks to Weiss with a raised brow, uncertain if they should cut to the front or not... Well. Until Elaine has one of the other volunteers take over for her in dishing out hearty bowls of the soup, so as to not disturb the line. ]
[ She's so relieved! Weiss had been focusing on Cloud the moment she woke up, but she'd kept Elaine in her thoughts the whole time. When they were asked to help and fight, Weiss didn't have time to get Elaine to safety. She can only hope that the rest of the people working at the farm are safe and sound, too. There will no doubt be losses, and it will all be tragic, but to know that the people she cares about are well and alive is a consolation.
With a sigh, she tugs on Cloud's hand so they can meet Elaine halfway. She's still not as energetic as she normally would be— she did say she was still feeling weak, after all— but she has it in her to lead the way without letting go of the blond's hand. ]
Oh, Elaine, I'm so glad you're okay.
[ She would hug Elaine, but she's a little reluctant to let go of Cloud right now. Elaine seems to understand, though, already looking the two up and down to check on them and their well-being. These two may as well be her children since they live together. Not to mention, they help around far more than her children did, whether it's at the farm or other things.
"We were evacuated by the knights, so all of us here are safe and doing what we can for everyone else," she begins, hands behind her back now as she tries to figure out in her little ol' head what the two have gone through. It's not often Weiss looks tired, and Cloud's always looked stern and standoffish, but he seems a little on the edge. The events happening should put people on edge, but Elaine trusts that the king and the magic of this kingdom would keep them away from more harm now that they're within castle grounds. So...
"I was able to bring my french press with me. You two sit down and I'll pour some tea."
And they can catch up. She'll probably try to get two bowls of soup and some bread for the two, too. ]
I can help— [ "Just have a seat, Weiss," the lady says, a little more firm with her tone. Weiss ends up standing up straight because of that. Ah... to think Elaine would refuse her help! But this is their landlady's way of saying the two need a break for once.
Weiss looks at Cloud so they can follow Elaine to the back. She has a small stack of items, bags and other trinkets from the farm, and she gestures for the two to take a seat. It's on the floor, so it's a little dirty, but it'll have to do for now when most seats are taken already in the big hall. ]
[ He wasn't expecting to find her here. Yet considering the dangers that loomed outside, hindsight tells him he's glad she found her way out here to help. If anything, any good news was actually good for Cloud's psyche. Weiss remains the anchor preventing him from drifting away, but having this much hope and warmth envelop him seemed to expedite his recovery. There's nothing to really set him off now if he keeps himself here. Focused on what he has left. The tug of his hand in hers as he's determined to be her rock despite how weak she feels. With an exhale, despite being on edge and paranoid by what he's done, he can't help but return a light smile back at Elaine as she explains what the knights did for her and the others. ]
Good...
[ When Weiss offers to help, this time it's the blond's turn to squeeze her hand. Just when he's about to protest and raise his own voice? Elaine does it for him. Rather comically, the younger Schnee isn't the only one whose back straightens. While she's always been a stronghearted lady, it's also not very often that Elaine takes charge like this either. And though she doesn't even say his name? He can practically feel it being called by her by proxy. Because if Weiss hadn't said anything...he honestly might have offered or insisted too. But he's really not in the mood for fighting over it.
Especially not when he's so uncertain what would happen if something set him off. Instead, he just nods right back at Weiss when they exchange a look. Before he can have a seat on the floor, he supports Weiss by the underside of her arm to help ease her down. ]
Soon as this is over, we'll all head back together.
[ She may have fallen over already if not for Cloud's help as they sit down. Once they're comfortable though? Weiss inches closer to the blond if it looks like he doesn't mind. She can walk fine, and even though she seems okay, her body isn't at its best just yet. If she has any Aura, her recovery would be a lot quicker. Alas...
She could use someone to lean on right now. Quite literally, in fact. ]
Elaine looks tired, too.
[ It must have been difficult, Weiss thinks. Then again, the situation now isn't the most ideal. All Weiss can do is watch Elaine as she prepares the tea, adding some dried tea leaves into the french press and letting it steep. The man who took over distributing soup to the line comes and offers two warm bowls to both Cloud and Weiss, saying they should eat up before it gets cold. No spoons for Weiss, though. She's going to have to take sips, instead. And she's quick to show her gratitude, arms shaking as she tries to keep her hands on the bowl. It's much heavier than Cloud's hand, so it's a little bit of a struggle up until she lets the bowl rest upright on her lap. ]
I'll wait a little before eating it, [ she tells Cloud once it's just the two of them again. She wants to be confident that she can lift the bowl... ]
[ She never seems tired. Having a hot cup of tea or coffee in the morning whenever they all run into each other didn't count either. Though she smiles and soldiers on, there's a very noticeable fatigue in her eyes that wasn't there before. If it weren't for his experiences in life leading up to coming here? Cloud may have never thought of planning something to repay her. A vacation. Or offer to take over all her farming and city duties for a day or two. Yet everything remains up in the air about whether or not the farm remains safe or not. Time will tell when they get back.
In the meantime, he's more keen on not only supporting Weiss, but making sure he keeps in check. Unfortunately for Weiss (yet fortunately for Cloud's focus), he's going to have to keep supporting her. Tender as his arm was, he can at least lift it up. He can push through as his own endurance remained higher. He quietly thanks the man who comes over with warm bowls of soup for the two. He has less problems holding the bowl up, creamy and rich as it smells...but watching Weiss struggle, his expression falters once more.
The urge to just support her is impossible to ignore. So when she resigns herself to waiting before she can eat? ]
Here...
[ He sets the bowl down in front of him on the floor before reaching over to her lap. ]
No. [ She shakes her head, holding onto the bowl of soup on her lap a little tighter. Her grip isn't as strong, but she'll keep it with her so Cloud can eat. It's not like she's going to grow weaker or anything if she doesn't eat right away. And for all the time that's passed, she doesn't know just how much Cloud's recovered, but she knows he's hungry. He just won't take care of himself. ] I can wait. You can go ahead.
[ Weiss doesn't mind being helped for anything, because she knows it in herself when to ask for help and when not to. One thing is for certain, though. She hates the feeling of being thought of as weak— unable to do anything on her own, or unable to help those around her. She's come so far as to being her own person, and as such, she wants to be out there. It's been far from her thoughts since, but... remembering how she couldn't even help Ruby, Yang, or Blake when they fell...
One look at Cloud, though, and these thoughts disperse. If it was bringing her down earlier? She brushes those thoughts away and replaces them with determination. She's with someone she admires— someone strong, someone she's devoted to, much like how she is with her family. If anything, these past experiences should push her to become stronger, not make her feel weaker. ]
[ Ultimately, he resigns himself. The fact that anything could set him off after what Rubion did, yet he accepts her insistence that he go first? It slowly but surely clicks with him as he reaches back down for his own bowl of soup. Tender as his "bad" arm is from fighting before, his own hold is still much stronger than hers. Granted, he's not the one who got carelessly thrown into an abandoned building... He can only hope that his dreams aren't corroded by his own guilt for long. It's easy to be lifted up when he has someone as strong as Weiss by his side. ]
... I'm gonna be okay. [ It's not just for himself. It's for Weiss to hear too as he holds his bowl, resolute. Only for the blond to let out a huff as he smiles back at her when she apologizes. ] For everyone to see too. You can make it up to me when we're home and better.
[ If the farm and home were still there... For now though, he carefully lifts the soup bowl to his lips and takes a sip. It's not scalding hot, thankfully in part to the thick, creamy nature of the soup. ]
[ She can see from her bowl that it's a mix of a lot of things. There probably wasn't any strict recipe that was followed, so long as it could feed people. Creamy and heavy, with chunks of chicken and beef and all kinds of vegetables. Not bad! But it's definitely very flavourful.
A short while later and Elaine is back, observing the two first before serving them their tea. Ah, Weiss isn't eating because she doesn't have a spoon? Elaine's got a fix for that.
"You should have said something sooner, Weiss," she says, offering the former heiress a spoon. It's clean, and unused! Looks like they had utensils here after all. ]
Oh— that wasn't... [ Why she hasn't eaten yet! But she can't help but laugh a little. You know what? This'll be her reason for letting Cloud eat first. There's no reason for what happened in the battlefield to find its way here. She got hurt, and so did Cloud, but the details of it? Best kept between the two.
The spoon is much lighter though! So, guess what, Cloud? She can eat now! ]
S'like a...cream of chicken? [ A beat. He squints at his bowl. Or rather, the cream-covered brown thing floating amongst the top. ] ...oh and beef.
It's good.
[ Just when he's prepared to take another drink of his soup, Elaine returns with a set of tea for them. It's like they're home...only with more dire straits. If nothing changed, he was either going to insist he fed her? Or get up for a spoon all on his own. Yet sure enough, the blond's eyes light up some when she brings a spoon for the former Heiress. That? Boosts his spirits even more. He doesn't have to be the one doing everything for her...but it's still good to know that despite everything, the woman who took them in hasn't changed much.
And sure enough? He's content with leaving the utensils for others and eating it the old fashion way. ...even if, when he next brings his bowl down from his mouth next, he's got something of a creamy moustache.
Shh. ]
What would we do without her...
[ Probably being forced to take living space from that weird noblewoman who kept eyeing him up. ...or rooming with others that came from this world. He'd take the latter. akfsdjh ]
[ Oh, snrk. Should she say it? A part of her doesn't want to, but... he looks so funny! She's covering her mouth because doing her best not to smile too much. Creamy moustache Cloud is the best thing to happen so far today. Oh, she hopes he doesn't get mad.
... maybe he'll notice on his own???
Even Elaine sees it and isn't saying anything. Ha ha ha! ]
[ He doesn't get it. If he actually grew significant facial hair he might have felt it. But he doesn't. Oh no. Cloud blinks, both realizing Elaine and Weiss look like they're trying to hide something. His cheeks fluster a little, but perhaps because of the company he's with, that doesn't seem to set him off. It seems as if Rubion's curse didn't necessarily invade moments like this. ...that or Cloud didn't get genuinely upset or mad about it. Still. ]
[ At first, it looks like there's some conflict between her and her thoughts. She wants to reach out to him and wipe away his moustache with her hanky, but... if he snaps at her— no, she can't think that. If they're going to move past this, Weiss has to trust in Cloud. The same way she always has.
And so, she takes out her handkerchief from her purse, reaches out to him, arms still trembling. ]
[ His voice trails off when he sees the way her arms are trembling, just in time for him to carefully set his bowl down in front of him. The lightheartedness he'd felt drops as he realizes why her arms continue to tremble. Reminded of what he did... But if he dwells too much on that now? Who knows what he'll be compelled to do? The fighting was, for all intents and purposes, over now. But he didn't know that. For all he knew, he could be going back out there, looking for a fight to avenge someone who didn't even need avenging anymore. But if there's one thing that's keeping him still...it's her voice echoing in his mind.
Telling him not to go. "Don't go." she pleads after what happened below in Lightless.
And when she reaches and manages to get the creamy 'stache off his upper lip, before she can move away? Both his hands settle beneath her forearms before moving up to her own hands. And he holds them there, not really giving a damn whether Elaine sees or not as he gives them a caring squeeze. They're going to support one another through this- but like hell was he going to sit there and let her tremble. ]
[ Weiss gets it, she thinks. That "thank you" isn't just for one small task that Cloud could have done on his own. It means more than that. While she doesn't say "you're welcome", she does give him just a little bit of that headtilt he's grown to be familiar with, coupled with a small and reassuring smile. She'll be here for him, always. Whether because they're happy, or one of them is hurting. Weiss will stick by Cloud no matter what. ]
So... should I ask Elaine to get a spoon for you, too?
[ With the soup moustache wiped away, she lowers her arms slowly. Cloud's helping her, so there's no need to rush. ]
[ Ah... There it is again. The light tilt of her head that just melts any depth of ice. A former ice queen who radiates the most warmth, and if it weren't for where they were? He'd have put the soup aside to just bring her into his arms right then and there. Here, Gaia, Remnant, another wayward world that still calls to them... Cloud swore that he would both protect and care for her through everything. Scared as he'd been before, here in the moment? He's equally as determined to make his way through this. ]
Nah. I'll just check for moustaches. [ Aahhh he said it! But, as he takes his bowl back in his hands, his gaze moves over to the elderly woman smiling dearly at the middle-aged soldier looking rather exhausted. Though as he's given his own bowl of soup, her nurturing nature rubs off on him, his back straightening out as he nods with enthusiasm. ] She's got enough on her plate.
[ Not just for Elaine, but for everyone. It's important to help those in need when and where you can, after all. Though Weiss may not be in a great condition to do that, she'd likely still push herself to do so unless Cloud says otherwise. In which case? She's gonna be sad about it and be pouty. :T
For now, she can finally eat! She has a spoon and she dips it in the soup, properly moving it away from her in the bowl before taking a sip of it. Warm... so warm, and it tastes good, too! Hopefully there's enough for any and all refugees coming in.
Weiss is quiet as she eats, only asking Cloud to eat more or if he wants her to pass the tea to him or if there's anything he needs once or twice. She'll always look out for him, after all, and being able to spoil him gives her energy, too. It uplifts her! The quiet atmosphere is good too, though, only exchanging looks every now and then and giving him a smile to show she's okay.
At some point while they eat, a child, maybe about 5 or 6 years old approaches them. If anything, she may be familiar to Cloud and Weiss! She's carrying a cute little puppy in her arms, and both are looking worse for wear.
"Excuse me, do you remember me? Would it be okay if I sat here too?" ]
Otto!
[ CLOUD!!! SHE DOESN'T KNOW THE KID'S NAME!!!! Please save this conversation. ]
[ Cloud does well to keep quiet as he eats too, content with the small talk or idle "right, here"s he'd say when passing the tea or asking for it in turn. Doing what they can. Taking care of one another wherever they can. Hungrier than he realized, he's already polished off his bowl before the child approaches them. As he wipes his mouth of any remaining creamy goodness, his eyes widen some when he recognizes...well. Admittedly the one that stands out the most is, the adorable puppy who seems to just brighten up at the sight of the couple.
Before he can so much as say anything, Otto is already yipping despite how dirty he looked. The little girl was also scraped and bruised. Whatever happened to them before arriving here, it couldn't have been good. But they survived. And just as Weiss was lighting up at the sight of Otto (Weiss please of course be happy to see the kid. ...right? FDKJASH), Cloud puts on a smile at their question. ]
Been a while, kiddo.
[ They...never got that girl's name when she came for her dog the first time, did they. Oops? ]
C'mon.
[ Sure enough, though he remains by Weiss' side, he still scooches in a little closer to his girlfriend until they're practically hip to hip. There's plenty of space to sit down now! And despite everything, the child's eyes light up before she bows her head again, just like when she thanked the two before. As she takes a seat, Otto starts to squirm a little. It smells the soup. ...or what's left in Cloud's bowl, anyway. But right now? The dirty pup is keen on saying hi and and giving out kisses.
No matter the world, did anybody truly deserve dogs.
"Okay. Go see her...!"
Aaand here comes Otto, in all his stubby legged glory. ]
[ Here comes Otto, indeed! Weiss has to look at Cloud first if he'd be okay with her playing with Otto for a while. That means her attention won't be on her food (which she's quickly set aside) or on him, after all. And since the dog is already sniffing at Weiss' hands before Cloud could say or do anything, of course she's already forgotten about asking for permission. ]
Hey there. I'm glad you're okay.
[ No babytalk this time. She's far too tired to be that energetic.
Weiss looks at Otto's owner and gives a small smile, too. Otto may be the former heiress' best friend (sorry, Ruby and Cloud), but the kid is also important. Especially at a time like this. ]
[ They exchange looks, the blond nodding quickly before letting go of her so Otto can give her some loving. He's been through enough, but Weiss? Weiss could probably use some of this right now. Which is why as he lets go, he takes a moment to close his eyes. ... And nothing happens. He exhales, realizing that he's going to be okay in the moment after all. ]
You know... I just realized. [ Cloud'll do it. He'll come right out and say it. ] We know Otto.
[ Yip! ]
But we never got your name.
[ ...actually, they never gave theirs, now that he's recalling. So of course? ]
I'm Cloud. And this is my partner, Weiss.
[ The child's face lights up further, as best as she can anyway for how tired she was.
[ Otto hops onto Weiss' lap, and now her skirt is full of dusted paw prints. At least it can be brushed away, but... man! It's gonna need a good cleaning later on. For now, Weiss gives attention to the dog with headpats, since she knows she should pay attention to the little girl, too.
She remembers that her parents were present when they were looking for Otto. Hopefully nothing bad's happened to them. Weiss tries not to assume anything, so she says it the way she has. ]
Did you just get here, Cecilia? We should look for your parents.
[ To that question, Cecilia frowns. She'd already asked the knights about her parents earlier, but no one said they saw her parents just yet. She explains what happened, too, and Weiss frowns too. Otto lets out a soft whimper.
If there's anything Weiss has learned from her friends, though? It's to stay optimistic. She doesn't want to give up just yet... ]
Then we'll wait for them. The knights probably haven't evacuated everyone yet. We'll stay here with you until we find them, okay?
[ As Otto hops right up into Weiss' lap, he can't help but huff with relief. He'll deal with his problems for as long as they persist, but for Weiss? Sometimes not everything could be solved with words or a reassuring touch. Not his, anyway. He never really considered himself a "pet" person, but there's really no denying the effect dogs seem to have on her. ...teasingly, the thought crosses his mind, wondering if it was his own lupine attributes on Prismatica that drew her in. ]
...
[ He can feel his heart sinking when Cecilia explains what happened. How she and Otto got separated when the wraiths stormed through. They'd been told to hide inside and not to come out for any reason. Not until they or the knights returned for them. In truths, her parents intended to lead them away from their home, even if it meant risking their lives... Cecilia and Otto did eventually come out of hiding, if only so they too could run from the ghoulish monsters.
Cloud doesn't know the fate of her parents. But...he can't help but let the worst thoughts cross his mind. And should they have come to pass? They were going to pay. His brows furrow, his grip on his bowl firming as he realizes his own frustrations are getting the better of him again.
That is, until Weiss is the one to bring him back. Yet again, with her optimism and words of encouragement. Cecilia and Cloud both look to her with wide yet hopeful eyes. And sure enough, seeing the child nod and scooch in a little closer to the two, Cloud can't help setting a hand on his girlfriend's shoulder. A silent thanks, for keeping the hope alive. ]
She's right. We're not going anywhere.
[ Cecilia and Otto don't have to be alone. And as if to concur? Otto paws his way up the front of Weiss' outfit, stubby legs supporting him as he gives a little kiss to her chin. Mlem.
"O-Otto..." she giggles. "Down boy." Sure enough, he listens, deciding to get cozy in Weiss' lap as he takes a seat, looking back at his owner with a happier panting face. ]
[ At first, she's not sure what the hand on her shoulder is for, but she looks up at him and figures it out. Just for that? She's inching closer to him, as if there were any more space between them, just to rest her head on his side. That's when Otto reaches up to give a little kiss, and— ]
Oh, hahaha! Gosh, you'we weawwy just so cute, awen't you?! [ Ah, there it is.
At least Weiss calms down enough when Cecilia tells Otto to go down. Weiss can't help but look at Cloud, too, happy and grateful that he's here with her. The two of them got lucky, but... there's no telling what it's like for the other people here. Whatever help they can give once they're able, they should. Then she looks at Cecilia, her face lit up with a new sense of hope... ]
I've never really said anything like that before, [ she says with a chuckle. That was aimed more towards Cloud, since he knows her better, but if Cecilia heard that? She'll just say it was nothing. Without the whole "tsundere" deal, even. ]
[ Frankly, with it just being the four of them, he doesn't care. He lets out a sigh of relief, for the moment forgetting about his bowl as he plants a kiss to the side of Weiss' head. Now she's getting Otto and Cloud kisses. Cecilia is just more hopeful and content in being there with the two. A fleeting comfort until they can figure out what happened to her folks... Eventually, Otto returns to his owner as they all enjoy the little peace they've made for themselves on the floor. Truthfully, it should have been uncomfortable. But at least in Cloud's case?
He's too tired to care. For now, they can talk and pass the time. As for Weiss making her words count...hope does prevail after all. Eventually, the knights do return with more survivors, among them? Cecilia's parents. Her father requires more immediate healing attention, however, barely conscious at the time of arriving with the rest of the refugees. But seeing her reunite with her family, her father no doubt strong enough to come back around after getting the help he needs...
Cloud keeps his hand in Weiss', fingers laced as he focuses on that very same feeling she gave to the little girl.
Hope. And come what may, they were going to hold onto it to the very end. ]

I'll do it.
[ He'll feed her. ]

I'm sorry I can't feed you this time, though.

Still. ]
What? What'd I do?
[ Drips into his bowl. dasfkjh ]

And so, she takes out her handkerchief from her purse, reaches out to him, arms still trembling. ]
Hold still for me. You have soup on your face.
no subject
[ ... OH. ]
Ah- Sorry. Must have been when I...
Thank you.
[ Not just for the napkin wipe either. ]
no subject
So... should I ask Elaine to get a spoon for you, too?
[ With the soup moustache wiped away, she lowers her arms slowly. Cloud's helping her, so there's no need to rush. ]
no subject
] She's got enough on her plate.
no subject
no subject
No matter the world, did anybody truly deserve dogs."Okay. Go see her...!"
Aaand here comes Otto, in all his stubby legged glory. ]
no subject
You too. I'm glad you're safe.
[ THEY STILL DONT KNOW HER NAME ]
no subject
"My name is Cecilia!" ]
no subject
We'll stay here with you until we find them, okay?
no subject
no subject
no subject
