Oh, that reminds me... [ Weiss doesn't let go of him, but she does shift in her seat so she can look at him. ] We forgot to order cake!
[ Not that she's complaining, but she left it all up to him and really just forgot about why she wanted to eat out in the first place. It's fine, and she's still smiling! They can easily fix that, anyway, but Cloud greeting her a happy birthday again... It's cementing all the more the fact that this is a day to be celebrated. It's a day to be happy. ]
Can you ask for the menu again? I wonder if they serve cheesecakes here.
[ For a moment, it looks like he feels bad for having forgotten about her cake. Even halfheartedly shrugging his shoulders in an "oops" fashion. As if right on cue, the server is seen wandering and wondering where her customers went. ]
Gotcha. [ A beat and a raised hand later. ] Hey!
[ Their salad isn't quite ready yet (they make the bacon and softboiled eggs fresh), but they happened by and noticed the two were gone. ]
You guys happen to have cheesecake?
[ "Oh, yes! We have our original creamy cheesecake, triple berry cheesecake, strawberry, caramel pecan, and double chocolate swirl." ]
[ Oh! There's the usual blueberry cheesecake, and she would have been fine with that, but triple berry? Sign her up. But she thinks Cloud would want the original type more, and that's fine with her! Strawberry sounds fine, too. All she wants for tonight is a slice, anyway. Or one of those 4-inch mini cakes. At least that'll be easy to finish. Something to take back to their room, light a candle on, so she can formalise her birthday wish.
... that, and it's dessert. (She still doesn't have a sweet tooth.) ]
Is triple berry okay? [ Say yes! Say yes! ] Or do you want the original more?
[ Hopefully Weiss doesn't notice, but he tries to quickly mouth the words "that one" to clue the server in. Without so much as batting an eyelash, the waitress jots their little order down and tells them she'll be back with their salad soon! In truth, it was Cloud's cue to switch things up. He wasn't sure what Weiss would want for a cake or not, but when cheesecake came into the equation?
Well...it's safe to say that when dessert comes, she's in for a little surprise.
He could have winked, but...winking at the waitress? ]
[ Yes!! A victory for Weiss. While she doesn't look elated that Cloud wants the kind of cake she wants, her smile does widen a bit. Until she realises that she's showing off too much glee over cake, anyway. (She'd been wanting cake since early this morning... Please let her have her cake.) ]
I know you don't like sweets that much, but on your birthday, you should get cake, too. Maybe I can have one made. I don't know if I trust myself to bake one on my own.
[ Weiss got all the cake she'd ever wanted last night. ]
Really? [ He blinks, curiously as he takes a sip of his water and looks down at her. ] I think you can do it. Baking's pretty precise.
[ Which means it's all about doing it by the book! With cooking, it's easier to get creative. ...and also mess things up. Crepes are kind of both? You need the right measurements AND need to cook them properly with the right equipment. ]
[ "...always perfect if it's from you." But he stops himself when he reflects on the times she'd protest and say how hard he works for her. Even wanting to make the perfect stew, reminiscent of his childhood days. Of course he's happy with anything and everything she's given him. But if this is what she wants to do, strive for that "perfection"... Who was he to stop her? He can be happy with what she's done and accept more. So letting that thought trail away, he genuinely smiles once more. ]
I'm looking forward to it.
[ A beat. ...two beats. ]
That was fun.
[ He ain't saying anything more on the subject. Whether it was baking the cookies, or getting distracted? They were having fun. ]
[ Move like he moved in with her, but... Weiss' apartment became his, then, too. She was scared that Cloud would have regrets if he moved in with her, especially if the pull of the moons became too much. After all she's confessed to him, he always made her feel okay. That she shouldn't have to worry about not being good enough for him, or if she's making him happy— the kind of habits Weiss embodied growing up, because she grew up wanting to please her father and receive attention. How it was with her father was wrong, but... there's nothing wrong with seeking approval from the person you love most, right? ]
It's not quite the same here, but I'm glad we have a room to call ours.
[ They can fill it with more and more memories. Not that Weiss could ever forget moments she's spent with him, though. ]
[ Cloud was the one who made the decision to move in with her. Knowing the risks and sway of the moons on them, he'd already agreed to her dating two people at the same time in the first place. Prismatica was all about adjustments and doing your damnest to go with the flow; that's how he tried tackling things there. Yet the longer his relationship with Weiss lasted, the deeper his devotion became in turn. He can't imagine living apart from her unless he was literally forced to now.
He sure as hell never wants to be alone ever again. ]
[ "It's not quite the same here, but I'm glad we have a room to call ours." ]
You ever think of us getting our own place again?
[ Not that he's tired of staying with Elaine! That was honestly such a blessing for them after all the effort they put into trying to find an affordable place to stay. And a place where neither one would be getting hit on nonstop. afdskjh ]
[ Her voice softens and she looks away, her hold of his hand loosening a little. ]
... I want to have a future with you. But when I start thinking about bigger things like finding our own place, maybe even our own vehicle, and years from now, wherever that might be, and maybe we can adopt a pet... [ Once they have their lives together! And when her story in Remnant has finished. And she looks at him to see how he might react to having a pet, hoping he'd find the silly thought amusing. She smiles after that, just a small one, fond thoughts making her feel light.
And at the same time, it's quick to make her heart sink. She already knows that nothing is impossible at this point, and Cloud has reminded her of this, too. Weiss keeps looking on the bright side, determination bleeding through in her gaze. There's just the possibility of failing and it terrifies her. It paralyses her thoughts at times, before she catches herself and snaps out of her thoughts, anyway.
Ah, yes. She should probably continue, huh? Probably not. She shakes her head with a soft laugh. ]
Nevermind. It's okay to be scared, so long as we don't let ourselves be ruled by fear.
[ Something that she told him before. One that she wanted him to embody. Turns out, she's the one who needs to hear these words; it just means she has to work harder to create her own path. Until there's nothing to fear anymore. ]
[ Though the hold on his hand loosens some, Cloud hasn't drawn away. Instead, he leans on the table with his forearm, watching her even while she opens up about her own dreams for their future. He couldn't have predicted the Beasts of Calamity all resurging the way they did. But at the end of the battle, they were all given a choice. Free pathways between worlds, Gaia, Remnant and alike. Yet here they are, undergoing another trial with less control than before... It's something he thinks about from time to time; they were so close to having everything they could have asked for. Worlds connected and lives entwined. Even that "future" they saw together could have very well been a reality...
He huffs with a faint chuckle at the thought of a pet, patiently waiting for her to finish as he mulls what's going through her mind. ]
...
[ She gets another squeeze of her hand, Cloud scooting in just a little closer at her side as he smiles confidently for her. ]
That's right. [ But most importantly, ] Tough as you are, I'll still be there when you need to get pulled back up.
[ Out of the depths of fear. She's in charge of her own destiny, but no one ever said that she had to do it alone. Same goes for Cloud. Where would he be without the support of his own family and friends? They're what he fights for. Weiss is what he fights for. For everything that he cherishes. ]
[ Like Weiss needs time to even think of a response to that. Cloud's always been there, looking out for her even when they'd only just met. And the days they've spent together from acquaintances to friends to lovers made her realise that no matter how big or small the issue would be, she can turn to Cloud for anything. And it's one of the reasons why she loves him so much.
Without anything else to add, she returns the squeeze of her hand with one of his own as she leans on him. The waitress has gone for now, so it shouldn't be too embarrassing if they're seated this way in public. ]
We've only known each other for a couple of years, but... it feels like we've gone through so much together.
Gotta say...we packed a lot of adventure into those two years. Fought all sorts of things. Almost feels like I've been at my busiest away from home. 'Specially with you.
[ Sure, there were obstacles along the way back home in his pursuit of Sephiroth. But back on Prismatica, for both the good and the bad, it seemed like there was always something new on the horizon. It seems that the multiverse picked a good time to pull him away; it was about time he finally learned what he wanted in life, and to learn what it meant to truly live for himself. To be happy and to express that happiness. ]
When we experienced the future— at least, what could be—it seemed more peaceful, didn't it? No threats on the horizon, and we were more focused on ourselves.
[ The world they made together. They had a family, a home, and they had people around them they called friends who also supported their family. Weiss wouldn't say it felt normal, but... at the end of the day, isn't that what one wants to achieve? Why Huntsmen and Huntresses fight relentlessly against what threatens mankind, or why Cloud and his friends did what they did, despite all tests and challenges. That they're--you're--together with the people you care about, and you live in a time of peace.
It was nice. And if Weiss had it her way, she'd want it to be that way. That Cloud wouldn't have to constantly risk his life for everyone and everything. He's already done so much and has gone through so much. What he should be doing now is enjoy life day by day, learn new things, meet people. Things that he missed out on. And it's what Weiss wants for herself, too. ]
We've got such a long way to go to get there. Maybe by then, you'll have figured out what your Semblance is.
[ He's not about to spoil the mood by telling her the inevitable truth, however. The truth that for every period of peace they get, there's bound to be trouble on the horizon. Whether they're the ones dealing with it or not? That remains to be seen. So instead, as he fondly reminisces over the memories they retained of that "future" they made, he's more intent on focusing ahead. There's still many trials Weiss must overcome before she can keep her own promise to him. And while he's bested Sephiroth time and time again, the Planet beginning to heal in the wake of destruction...who knows how long that peace will last?
Day by day. They just need to live day by day. ]
Y'know...since it's your birthday, I got a confession.
[ Cloud's not that embarrassed about it. But, well...to put it bluntly, ]
I still daydream from time to time about a Semblance.
I'm sure you have one! You just haven't discovered what it is, yet. Everyone who has their Aura unlocked has one.
[ Until they get stolen or whatever, anyway... Not that Weiss is aware of that kind of thing. ]
It was only easy to know what mine is because it runs in the family.
[ One of the very unique cases of hereditary semblance. The Schnees might be the only ones in Remnant who have such a trait, too. At least, to Weiss' knowledge, anyway. ]
I'm not quite sure what you need to do to activate it, though. Maybe someone needs to threaten to shave your head off. [ A beat. Her eyes widen and she pouts at him. She heard it (and imagined it) as soon as she said it. ] Don't you ever let that happen.
[ They're bound to be interrupted by the waitress bringing their food soon, but he'll tell her his daydream ideas of what his Semblance could be soon enough. ...her comment on hereditary semblances does make him wonder, however. If he were to unlock his and they wound up having a kid one day like the "future" showed them... Would she inherit Glyphs like the Schnees before her? Or perhaps something entirely different?
Seems that the blond had something else to daydream mull over in his spare time. But any of those thoughts go flying out the window when she doubles over on what she just said about shaving his head. His eyes widen in a comically similar fashion to Weiss', though his innocent expression remains in the face of her pout. But he's also the first one to crack and chuckle, shoulders shaking slightly. ]
I'll try. Only way I'm lopping this off is if I literally had no choice.
[ Say, choosing between shaving his head and saving Weiss' life or something like that. But he already knows how silly this path of thought was getting for them, so he sighs through his nose, smiling with a shake of his head. ]
Till that day comes... I'll use what power I've got now.
[ Sure enough, as Cloud asks this question, from the corner of his eye, he spots their server approaching with their order of cobb salads. A full-size one for him and a half-size one for Weiss. Even the half-size was piled considerately high... Thankfully? It works out! Because if, by chance, Weiss wants some more, she can take from his plate. Offering a little "thanks" as their plates are dropped down for them, he spares a glance with his girlfriend, smiling with a nod. There's plenty of room on this side of the table for them to eat side-by-side.
The lettuce is crisp and fresh, yet surprisingly thick of leaf. Lettuce had a tendency of getting a bad rap as being practically water, but the corn, bacon and avocado that's spread throughout the mixture creates a good blend of flavors. It's...honestly his first time having this type of salad. He may not be the best cook (unless it's crepes. god those drilled into his head,) but he's going to remember this if Weiss happens to like it too. ]
Before we head back... [ he starts after swallowing his forkful. ] There's somewhere I wanna take you.
[ Just so she doesn't think their day ends after dinner and they go right back to their room. ]
[ Weiss had only really prepared to go out for the dance class. Even going out to dinner is unexpected for her, but definitely not unwelcome! She'll go where Cloud wants to go, of course. This is just surprising. ]
[ More specifically, it's an isolated location just on the border of the resort. There's steps built in that lead to the top of an isolated hill. From the top, one can see the springs and resort. And in the distance? The fabled city of Camelot they now call home. His first night here, he'd taken it all in from up here... But he has a plan for when they get there.
They'd been prepared to go out for the dance class...but he still wants one more from her, as twilight casts its glow from the horizon and the stars slowly begin kissing the night sky.
Until then? He wants her to enjoy her birthday dinner and cake to come. The staff would deliver it with a candle alit, as per Cloud's instructions for the birthday girl. ]
Okay. Hopefully it's not too cold on the way back.
[ She's used to the cold, but it doesn't mean she's immune to it! Her shoulders are bare right now, after all. Cloud has his suit, at least, but Weiss wouldn't dare ask him to take it off for her.
After that, she goes back to eating. It's a very good salad— one that she appreciates a lot! Though at some point, she has to ask Cloud what happened to his steak.
